Connecting USB Devices to your Office PC

By default, your office PC may not be set up to allow you to plug in USB devices that require their own drive letter. This includes storage media such as flash disks (pen drives, jump drives, USB sticks, etc.,) external hard drives or zip drives, cameras, etc. If you have one of these devices and it's not being recognized when you plug it in, please follow parts 1 and 2 below. Please note, depending on the device and your operating system, you may also need to install the manufacturer's drivers in addition to using the following steps.

You will need administrative rights on your PC to be able to follow these instructions.

Part 1: Configuring the Novell client

  1. Right-click the red N in the System Tray (this is the area in the lower, right corner of your screen by the current time)
  2. Choose Novell Client Properties
  3. Click the Client tab
  4. Next to First network drive, select H
  5. You will be prompted to reboot but you still have one more change to make before rebooting (part 2) so don't reboot yet

Part 2: Changing your NWLOGIN variable

If you are running Windows XP

  1. Right-click My Computer
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click the Advanced tab
  4. Click the Environment Variables button
  5. Under System variables click New
  6. Enter the Variable Name - NWLOGIN (in all caps)
  7. Enter the Variable Value - H (upper case)
  8. Click OK
  9. Click OK
  10. Click OK
  11. Reboot

After rebooting, when you plug your flash drive into the USB port, it will obtain its own drive letter.
