Note: To connect to the IPFW network, you must have a username and a network password.

  1. Double-click the Macintosh HD icon.

Changing your password

Your password expires periodically at which time you will need to change it. Additionally, if your password becomes public knowledge, you should change it immediately.

Mounting Volumes/Network Storage Areas

To access your individual network storage space, departmental space, web space and the software available on the network, you will need to mount volumes on your desktop. You can do this by following the steps below. If you do not have the Prosoft client installed on your PC, you can also use an FTP program to access files.

  1. From the Prosoft NetWare client, click the Browse button.
    • Some older versions of OS X allow you to click the green tree at the upper-right hand side of the screen and select Browse NDS from the drop down menu that appears; this will open the Prosoft NetWare client for you.
  2. Screen capture-leaved tree

  3. Click World.
  4. Click IPFW_TREE.
  5. Click IPFW.
  6. Scroll down and click servers.
  7. Scroll down and click CLA_USERFILES to mount your personal drive space, CLA_SHAREDFILES to mount your shared department storage area or WEB3_WEB to mount your personal or departmental web pages.
  8. Click the Mount button to mount the volume.
  9. To have these volumes automatically mount on login, click Mounts at the top of the window and select the volumes you want to automatically mount, then click Mount.
  10. You can close the login box by clicking the X in the upper left corner.

Files on the above volumes are backed up by IT Services on a nightly/weekly basis. Your non-network programs and personal files are stored on your Macintosh hard drive or on removable media. Note: you are responsible for making backups of the files you store on local drives.

USERFILES is designated as your personal storage area and no one else has access to this area. You have an initial allotment of 25 MB of storage on the server for this folder. Currently, the Mac cannot properly show you how much free space you have in this volume.

SHAREDFILES is designated as a shared area within a department or office group. There may be several people who have access to this area. This is the place to share documentation and data needed by multiple people in a department or office group. Your department is allotted at least 25 MB of storage on this drive.

If you have exceeded your disk quota on the user volume server storage areas, you will receive an error message. The available space on these drives is intended primarily for storage of current projects. Archive the older files to your Macintosh hard drive, save them to a labeled floppy disk, or use a tape backup. Then, delete those files from the user folder or shared folder to make the space available for new material.

If your current projects require more space than the quota allows, you may contact the Help Desk (KT 206, ext. 260-481-6030) to request more storage. Your allotment will be increased accordingly if there is space available.

Network Software

If you require software for your MAC that does not appear in the usual IPFW computer configuration, the Help Desk (260-481-6030) can give you information on installing standard site-licensed software applications for your MAC from the IPFW servers. In some cases, it's as simple as creating an alias to the program on the server and Help Desk Operators can guide you through the process.

You must be logged in to the IPFW Tree with a user name and password in order to use Network software.

Logging off

When you are finished working, you should log off the network. To do this, follow the steps below.

  1. From the Prosoft NetWare client, click the logout button.
    • Some older versions of OS X will allow you to click the green tree icon in the upper-right hand corner of the screen and select NDS Logout to access the NetWare client's login page.
  2. Screen capture-tree with leaves

  3. The tree icon in the upper right corner will go bare to show that you are no longer connected to the network and any mounted volumes will be unmounted.

If you have any questions or problems, feel free to call the Help Desk at 481-6030.
