Installing IE 7
This installation may set Internet Explorer as your default browser.
- Close all open applications.
- Open Internet Explorer 6.
- From the toolbar, click Tools > Windows Update. The Microsoft Windows Update page will open in your browser.
- Under “Keep your computer up to date”, click the Custom button. Windows Update will check for available upgrades.
- Click Software, Optional from the “Select by Type” section of the sidebar.
- In the “Optional software updates” window, check the box next to “Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP”
- Click “Review and install updates”.
- From the “Review and Install Updates” page, make sure that “Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP” is listed and click Install Updates.
- Once the update has finished installing, you may be prompted to restart Windows. You may do so now or wait until later; however, the update may not take effect until you restart Windows.
Backing Up Favorites in IE 7
- Click the Add to Favorites icon in the upper left-hand corner of the window.
- From the drop-down menu that appears, select Import and Export… to open the Import/Export Wizard.
- From the Import/Export Wizard’s Welcome screen, click Next.
- Select Export Favorites and click Next.
- If you would like to export all of your favorites, select the Favorites folder; alternatively, you can choose to export a subfolder of your Favorites. Click Next.
- Make sure that “Export to a File or Address” is selected and click Browse.
- From the Windows Explorer window that appears, select the location where you would like to save your Favorites folder and click Save.
- From the Import/Export Wizard, check that the location you selected is displayed in the text field labeled “Export to a File or Address” and click Next.
- Click Finish to complete the Import/Export Wizard.
- From the Export Favorites pop-up window that appears, click OK.
AutoComplete in IE 7
The AutoComplete feature saves previous entries you've made for Web addresses, forms, and passwords. When you type information in one of these fields, AutoComplete suggests possible matches. These matches can include folder and program names you type in the Address bar, and search queries, stock quotes, or information for just about any other field you fill in on a Web page.
In most cases, it's a good idea to turn off the AutoComplete option that stores your passwords.
- Click Tools > Internet Options.
- Click the Content tab.
- From the Auto Complete section, click the Settings button.
- Uncheck User names and passwords on forms.
- Click OK.
- Click the General tab.
- From the Browsing History section, click Delete…
- From the Delete Browsing History window, in the Form data section, click the Delete forms… button.
- From the Passwords section, click the Delete passwords… section.
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
Be sure to fully read the prompts that appear while browsing the web. Auto complete is most often turned on when you click Yes to a prompt asking if you want to remember passwords.
Installing IE 6
To install on an off-campus computer, go to Microsoft's web site or purchase the IUWARE CD from Fillet's Bookstore.
This installation may set Internet Explorer as your default browser.
- Close all open applications
- Click the Start button
- Click IPFW Icons
- Click Internet
- Click Updates
- Click Internet Explorer 6
- A license agreement may open
- Select I accept the agreement
- Click Next
- If you have Windows 98, you can choose between a typical or custom install
- Choose Install Now - Typical set of components
- If you have Windows 2000 or XP you will get a confirmation screen that you are installing IE 6
- Click Next
- If IE 6 is already installed, you will be given an option to exit the setup or reinstall
- Select Reinstall all components
- Click OK
- The installation process will begin
- Click Finish to restart your computer and complete the installation
Backing Up Favorites in IE 6
- On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
- Double-click the C: drive.
- Double-Click the Windows folder to view all files.
- Right-click the Favorites folder.
- From the context sensitive menu, select Copy.
- You can close the window from the X in the upper right corner. Then, double-click on My Computer again and double-click on the desired drive letter.
- Right-click in any space where there is not a folder or file in that window.
- From the right-click menu select Paste.
- This will copy the Favorites folder to another drive for safe keeping.
- Remember, to do this on a regular basis (at least once a month) to keep your favorites up-to-date.
Auto complete in IE 6
- From the top menu bar, Click Tools > Internet Options.
- Select the Content tab.
- In the Personal information section, click the Auto complete button.
- Uncheck User names and passwords on forms.
- Finally, click the Clear Passwords button to delete any passwords that might already be stored.
- A prompt will ask if you want to clear all previously saved form passwords. Click OK.
- Continue clicking OK to exit Internet Options.
