GroupWise v.7 Basic Topics
Opening GroupWise
- Double-click the GroupWise icon on your desktop.
- You can also click Start > IPFW Icons > Email > GroupWise.
Logging In
- When launching GroupWise, you will only be prompted for your password. GroupWise does not ask for your username since it assumes you want to log into mail with the same username you logged into the PC with.
- Enter your network password.
- You will be taken to your mailbox.
- If you do not want to log into GroupWise with the same username that you logged into the PC with, click Start > IPFW Icons > Email > Shared GroupWise. This option will give you a username and password box to fill in.
Installing/Reinstalling GroupWise
- Close all open applications.
- Click Start > IPFW Icons > Email > Installs > GroupWise 7 SP2
- The InstallShield Wizard will install GroupWise on your computer. Once it has completed the installation, click Finish.
- Right-click the GroupWise 7 icon on your desktop.
- Choose Verify.
- After verify runs you should restart your computer.
- If you encounter any problems during the installation of GroupWise, contact the Help Desk at 260-481-6030.
Reading Mail
- Select your Mailbox from the Folders List on the left.
- If your folder list does not appear, click View > Folder List.
- The contents of your Mailbox are displayed in the Item List on the right.
- The unread message icon looks like the front of an envelope and subject text is bold.
- Double-click the message to read the contents.
Composing Messages
- Click the New Mail button on the toolbar.

- Enter the email addresses for the recipients.
- If the person is an IPFW employee and has a GroupWise account, you can just begin typing their last name in the To field and the rest should auto fill.

- You can also click the Address Book icon and choose the address from one of your address books. For more information, consult the online documentation for the GroupWise Address Book.
- If you know the person's email address, you can just type it out.
- Enter a subject and body.
- If you need to add a tab in the body of the message, you will have to type Ctrl + Tab.
- If you are not ready to send the message, click File > Save Draft. The message will be saved into the Work In Progress folder where you can return to it later.
- Click the Send button.
Sent Mail

- By default, a copy of every message you send shows up in a folder called Sent Items.
- Double-click one of these sent messages to view the message.
- If you see the properties of the message, not the text, click Tools > Options. Double-click Environment. Click the Default Actions tab. Under Sent Items, select Open item, Click OK to save this setting..
- You can use the messages in this folder to see if the recipient has opened the message or not. NOTE: this only applies to messages sent to those using IPFW's GroupWise.
- Right-click a message you have sent and choose Properties.
- You can see if the message has been delivered, opened, deleted, etc.
- Because this only works on messages sent to those on GroupWise, the messages you send to off campus addresses, will only say Transferred once they have left our mail system.
Forwarding
- You have two options when forwarding--forward and forward as attachment.
- To see these options, click the down-pointing triangle to the right of the Forward button.
- Be aware that some mail systems block attachments, including messages forwarded as attachments.
Attaching Files
- Create a new mail message.
- Click the Attach (paper clip) button.
- Browse to the location of the file and double-click it.
- The attached file will appear in the attachments pane of the message window.
- You can also drag files into this attachments pane to attach them to the message.
Receiving Attachments
- You have several options when dealing with attached files.
- You can choose to delete the message if you don't recognize the address it came from or it looks suspicious.
- You can double-click the attachment--this will usually open the file inside the program it was created in.
- If the file is not opened in its corresponding application, click Tools > Options. Double-click Environment and click the Default Actions tab. Under File Attachments, select Open attachment.
- You can single-click the attachment--this will let you view the contents of the file inside the GroupWise message window. This only works with common file formats such as Word, WordPerfect, JPG, GIF, etc.
- You can right-click the attachment and save it to your PC.
- You can drag the attachment to your desktop or other location on your PC.
Note: Be suspicious of unknown or unexpected attachments--even when they come from addresses you recognize. The attached file could contain a computer virus.
Deleting Mail
- As with almost everything on the computer, there are several ways to delete messages.
- You can highlight the message by clicking it and then press the delete key on your keyboard.
- You can also right-click the message and choose Delete.
- To select multiple messages, hold down the Shift (sequential) or Ctrl (non-sequential) key while clicking the messages.
- Messages will stay in the trash for 7 days before being purged by the server. NOTE: if the server is running low on space, one of its reclaim measures is to start deleting mail in the trash before 7 days. The trash is NOT a safe place to store messages on a long term basis.
