Eudora for Windows

This page will help you start using Eudora for Windows. The document was originally written by IUB's UCS Publications group and has been edited to match IPFW's environment.

Introducing Eudora for Windows

PC Eudora is a work-station mail program for Windows. Think of PC Eudora as your personal mail valet, a servant to help you compose your mail, take outbound letters to the mail box, and check the post office for incoming mail. PC Eudora is friendlier and faster than server-based e-mail because you compose, edit, and manage your mail directly on your PC, not on a server. PC Eudora offers many features including:

As a "client" program, PC Eudora sends and fetches mail via corresponding "server" software on key IPFW computers. PC Eudora uses Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to submit outbound mail to a server on ipfw.edu and Post Office Protocol (POP3) to fetch new mail from POP servers. Besides the main ipfw.edu POP server, individual departments may maintain their own POP3 servers. If you have an account on such a departmental machine, contact its system administrator for details on how to configure Eudora.

What You Need To Use Eudora

If you are Faculty or Staff you need:

  • An account on the POP server, GroupWise server or another POP3 compatible account.
  • A PC running Windows 98 or higher.
  • An Ethernet connection to IPFW's campus network.
  • Enough disk space on your PC to contain your personal mail files.
  • PC Eudora software.

Installing PC Eudora on Campus

Note: When reinstalling or upgrading Eudora, you should make a backup of your files in c:\mail or which ever directory you have your mail stored in.

Mail Account Settings

Options

PC Eudora preferences are called Options. You'll find Options under the Tools menu. The most important option is the Leave Mail on Server switch under Incoming Mail. With this box checked, mail that is "popped" by Eudora remains available on your the POP server. Without this box checked, new mail that is "popped" by Eudora is permanently deleted from your account on the server. The advantage of leaving mail on your account is that the mail is still available if you want to access the messages directly on the server; the disadvantages are that you will have to manage mail in two places and your mailbox could fill up past its quota. Consider your choice carefully, but remember that you may change the switch at any time.
