Web Space Troubleshooting

I Uploaded my pages, but they won't open. What's the problem?

  1. Be sure you don't have spaces in the file name. Web pages with spaces between the words of a multiple word file name is not recommended. (Bad: My Super Web Page.html) (Good: MySuperWebPage.html)
  2. Be sure you saved your files the correct folder. That's the only way they can be seen on the Web. These locations are different for faculty/staff and student.

I can't get my files to upload!

If you are using the AOL browser you may have problems. You should have another type of Browser software on your computer so once you have connected via AOL, simply minimize the AOL window and open Internet Explorer or Firefox and set the address line for https://my.ipfw.edu.

If you're not using AOL, it could be that your browser is too old. In the labs, the most current version of Internet Explorer and Firefox are installed.

My files don't look right on the screen!

If you are uploading files via myIPFW, the file may have been corrupted during the upload process. Try the upload process again and then go and refresh your browser window to see the newest image of your Web page.

Are your files HTML or image files? (Hint--look at the end of the filename; if there is no ".html" or WWW compatible graphics/media extension, the browser can't interpret your file.) Although you can upload any kind of file to your folder, only those designed for the Web will display correctly.

I edited my file, but when I click on the filename, it looks exactly like it did before.

Click the Reload or Refresh button on your browse to see the changes you made to your page. Browsers act like cameras. They take one picture of your Web page when you type in the URL. But if you change something on the page and re-save it, you have to tell the Browser to go take another picture.

Why won't my links work? I double-checked my typing and there are no errors.

Check your links in Notepad or another text editor to make sure the program you wrote your page in did not insert the drive letter before the file name. (Example file:///A|/com559.html) If you see a reference to a drive letter in the link, delete everything except the name of the file. Once you've corrected the problem save the file back to your web space and overwrite the existing file. As a precaution, go to the Web and test every link to be sure they work.
