General PC Problems

Problem: PC won't boot

Possible Solutions:

  • Make sure PC and monitor are plugged in
  • Make sure power strip is plugged in
  • Try a different power outlet
  • Make sure both PC and monitor are turned on
  • Are there any lights on the PC?

Problem: Non system disk or ntldr error on bootup

Possible Solution:

  • Remove the floppy, zip disk or CD from the drive and reboot the PC.

Problem: PC makes loud clicking or "ka-chunk" sound

Course of Action:

  • Contact the Help Desk ASAP and have them listen to the sound. It could be something minor like a bearing in a fan or it could mean the hard drive is failing.

Problem: Beeping noise on bootup

Possible Solutions:

  • If it is a continuous beep, a key may be stuck. If it is an unusual set of beeps, there could be a hardware problem. Contact the Help Desk.
