Preparing For Your New/Rebuilt PC

Intended Audience This document is intended to provide faculty and staff with information and tips on the transition to a new/different computer connected to the IPFW network.

Answer Questions for Installation Work Order

Before your computer can be installed by IT Services, there is important information needed to configure and install your computer on the IPFW network. When Purchasing notifies IT Services that your equipment has been ordered, you will be sent an e-mail questionnaire. Please use this planning sheet so you are prepared to answer the install questionnaire when you receive it.

Where is the equipment that is being replaced, rebuilt or upgraded located? If you don't have a PC currently or this PC is in addition to one you already have, skip.
Building & Room:

Specific Info (which desk or cubicle):

If you do not currently have a PC or this is an additional computer, where should it be set up?
Building & Room:

Specific Info (which desk or cubicle):

If this is a laptop computer will it be used on campus, off campus or both?

What is the serial number of your current computer? This will be on a sticker on the tower. The number will begin with "S/N" or "Svc Tag".

What is the brand and/or model of the PC? This will be on the front of the tower but you can also find it electronically.

What operating system are you currently running? [finding this]

If you not currently running Windows XP or Mac OS 10, be aware your new PC's operating system may be different than what you are used to.

What is the speed of your current processor? [finding this]

If the processor speed is less than a Pentium III (or equivalent) 800MHz (Windows) or a G4 (Macintosh), the PC is below the minimum network requirements and cannot be upgraded or installed back on the network. The Accounting Services Form 9 will need to be filled out for the equipment to be taken to salvage.

How much memory do you currently have? [finding this]

If the PC has less than 512MB but the processor meets the minimum requirements, you may be able to upgrade the memory.

If the PC meets or exceeds the minimum network requirements, who will the current PC go to? If rebuild or upgrade, skip.

If you have a local printer (one connected directly to your computer) what is the brand and model number? IT Services technicians will install the drivers for local printers.

For networked (office) printers, you will be provided instructions to install these when you receive the new or rebuilt/upgraded PC.

Who are the primary and secondary contacts for the install, upgrade or rebuild of the PC?

What files are to be copied to your new, rebuilt or upgraded PC? If you can provide the location of files on you C drive that you want copied to your new PC, it will greatly assist us in making sure you have the files you need when you get your PC back. All files will be backed up but you may not immediately have access to the files on your new PC if you do not specify what to copy beforehand.
For example, c:\Docs, c:\My Documents, c:\download, etc.

Do you currently use any databases written by IT Services?

Please provide the names and/or usernames of any other people who will be using this PC. If you do not provide a list, they may not be able to use the PC. Please also note whether these additional people should have Administrative or Power User access.

Does your current computer have a Zip drive? What size? (This will be molded into the plastic front of the drive where you insert the disk.) If it does, there are some compatibility issues you should be aware of.

Additional comments or information:

Once the above information has been received, your installation will be entered into the IT Services tracking system. When the computer arrives, Shipping and Receiving will notify you and IT Services. You will then be contacted by e-mail and offered the next available installation date(s). Your old equipment will be removed from your office the afternoon before the installation of your new machine. When you get your new or rebuilt PC back, you will need to follow some steps to reinstall printers and any software not part of the standard install:

Microsoft Office
Internet Explorer
GroupWise (Windows and on campus desktop PCs only)
Trend OfficeScan AntiVirus (Windows Only)
Adobe 6 Professional (Windows and on campus desktop PCs only)

If you have special software that is not on the IPFW network, you will need to reinstall this software from your disks.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please contact Amy Carter at cartera@ipfw.edu. By gathering all of the pertinent information ahead of time, we can work hard to shorten the time it takes to get your computer installed after it arrives on campus.

If you are using Dreamweaver, you should be aware your site definitions cannot be transferred to your new PC by a technician. You should take steps to migrate your site information before your old PC is removed from your office.
