Installation/Upgrade Process for
IPFW Departmental Computers

Intended Audience This document is intended to provide faculty and staff with information and tips on the transition to a new/different computer connected to the IPFW network.

Office Purchase of New Computers

IPFW employees will obtain office computers through their departments. These computers can be integrated into the campus wide network where site-licensed software and other campus resources are provided. Pricing and ordering for personal computers is done through IPFW's Purchasing Department. A minimum configuration list for both Windows XP and Macintosh OS 10 systems is available from them. However, these minimum configurations may not apply to users with demanding applications. Purchasing can review your software specifications and will involve IT Services, as needed, to ensure that you select a compatible system. We have some helpful tips online to be used as a guideline when purchasing equipment.

If you are contemplating purchasing a new computer, or upgrading your current system, weigh the options carefully. The newer software requires bigger, faster equipment to operate. Software application requirements will drive the features, performance and design of the computer you select. Also, some older applications may not work on a newer PC or a newer operating system.

Office Purchase of Used Computers

Occasionally IT Services will facilitate the sale of computer equipment that departments no longer wish to use. This equipment meets the network minimum requirements but usually is not under warranty anymore. If your department is interested in purchasing used computer equipment, please check the "ipfw.technology.news" newsgroup for sale listings.

Upgrading Your Operating System

Currently Windows XP Professional is the preferred operating system for campus workstations. If your PC meets the minimum network requirements you may schedule an upgrade for your PC at no charge to your department. Your PC will be removed from your office to perform this upgrade.

Rebuilding a PC's Operating System

If a PC is being transferred to another person in your department, it is recommended you have the computer "wiped" with a fresh install of the operating system and applications. This ensures the new owner will not have to deal with problems created by the previous owner.

Process Overview

If you are purchasing a new PC, you will need to contact Purchasing first about ordering the PC. If you are purchasing a used PC, there will be contact information in the for sale listing on the Free or For Sale bulletin board (newsgroup). If you are upgrading or rebuilding your PC's operating system, begin the process by entering a work order with the IT Services Install Coordinator, Amy Carter, at cartera@ipfw.edu.

The Install Coordinator will contact you about scheduling the install/upgrade of your PC. This will involve taking your current PC for 1-3 days for files to be backed up and restored. Your new or newly rebuilt PC will be delivered to your office once all files are restored to it. To make this process flow smoothly, you should be aware of the preparation and post-delivery information.

If you are getting a new operating system, there will be a learning curve to climb. Because of time constraints, the technician who installs your computer will not be able to show you how to use it. So, please prepare yourself for the new environment beforehand. IT Services can offer training that will provide you with start-up skills.
