Student Access Computing Facilities

Help & Support

Student consultants are available for assistance after 8 a.m. during most open lab hours. Consultants help with the physical use of facilities and with some of the idiosyncrasies of the various operating systems. They help interpret error messages, but do not write programs or papers for students' class assignments. Thus, the responsibility of teaching the specific use of the computer in terms of the course requirements, primarily lies with the instructor. Short courses on highly requested topics are available to students through the Center for Academic Support and Advancement (CASA). The schedule for these STEPS classes is posted on the Web.

Consultants Will:

  • Assist you in logging on and off the PC network
  • Assist you in accessing and exiting software from the network
  • Assist you in accessing and exiting NIMS e-mail
  • Assist you in printing to lab printers
  • Assist you if experiencing scanner problems
  • Maintain printers
  • Assist in trouble-shooting equipment problems

Consultants Will NOT:

  • Do your project for you
  • Teach you the various software applications (refer to on-line help, software manuals, TAs, or your instructor for this level of assistance)

If there appears to be a hardware or software problem with the PC, please try rebooting the PC. If that does not fix the issue, alert the lab consultant on duty and move to another station.

When a PC locks and you have not saved your most recent changes to a word processing file, don't panic. Most word processing applications make a backup copy. Reboot and open the application you were working in, and follow its instructions to recover your file.

The Student Lab Supervisor is Kathy Skurzewski (e-mail: skurzewk@ipfw.edu - phone: 481-6068).
