Password Security

Passwords are like underwear . . .

  • Change yours often!
  • Don't leave yours lying around!
  • The longer the better!
  • Don't share yours with friends!
  • Be mysterious!

Why password security is important

When you connect to IPFW's network of computing services, you must provide a password that proves you are who you say you are. Should someone steal your password, he or she can masquerade as you. The intruder will then have access to your files on network drives, e-mails, and possibly more.

As a faculty member

It is important that you protect your intellectual property, your creative writings, files related to sensitive issues such as hearings, and your research data. If you advise students as well, your access to student information must be safeguarded. You also provide the model for the students with whom you come in contact. As a staff person, you have more at risk than just your own information. You may have access to student records, department funds, and proprietary information, all of which you need to protect in order to maintain the reputation of your department and protect the University against liability.

A stolen password gives others power to:

  • Modify or destroy your files
  • Send electronic mail threats in your name for which you will be held responsible
  • Subscribe to unwanted services for which you will have to pay
  • A stolen password can wreak havoc!
