IPFW Network
Monitoring and Access Guidelines
ITS Systems Administration monitors IPFW network traffic to address any network usage or quality of service issues. Although traffic is not being monitored for content, the content may be viewable. We reserve the right to monitor said traffic without prior permission per The Wiretap Act, the Pen Register and the Trap and Trace statues "Provider Exception" clauses.
ITS Systems Administration limits bandwidth available for uses which are not considered part of the university mission, such as gaming, music and video (for non-instructional purposes). These are dynamically limited so as to not negatively impact network response time across campus.
Prior to connecting any workstation to the IPFW network that will function as a server, contact ITS Help Desk to open a track. Provide your name, contact information and the purpose of the server. ITS Systems Administration will contact you to discuss your request.
NOTE: DNS, DHCP and SMTP servers are restricted to ITS operations only.
IPFW Network Access for Computer Workstations
Wired Access
Computer workstations to be connected to the IPFW network must meet the current network minimum as explained on the Minimum Networked Workstation/Printer Standards Web page found at http://www.its.ipfw.edu/policies/workstations.shtml .
Workstations will need current network protocols to be installed by ITS, and each end user will need an IPFW network account. Requestor should contact ITS Help Desk at 481-6030 to open a work order.
Wireless Access
Wireless access to the IPFW network is restricted to faculty, staff and students with a valid network account. See http://www.its.ipfw.edu/wireless/ for further information.
Due to possible interference with the campus wireless system, any wireless devices that will function as a wireless access point, router or server should be approved by ITS. Prior to connecting any such wireless device contact ITS Help Desk to open a track. Provide your name, contact information and the purpose of this wireless service. Failure to comply may result in the device being disconnected from the IPFW network.
Problem Devices Not Managed by IT Services
Any workstations, servers, or devices that are performing the function of a server, not managed by IT Services, but connected to the IPFW network must have up-to-date virus protection and current operating system patches. All servers should have unnecessary ports and services turned off. If said device is found to be lacking in compliance, IT Services will notify the person or department responsible to bring the device up to current standards. If device does not meet compliance within 48 hours, the device will be disconnected from the IPFW network.
If IT Services is aware of any server or workstation not managed by ITS, that appears to be involved in any activity that could negatively impact the IPFW network the following action will be taken:
If IT Services has administrative rights to the offending device, ITS will take corrective action. If IT Services is unable to resolve the problem or does not have administrative rights to the offending device, ITS will try to contact the party responsible for the server. Depending on the severity of the activity, ITS reserves the right to immediately disconnect the device from the network.
Any offending device that has been removed from the network will not be reconnected until the responsible party has corrected the problem to the satisfaction of ITS Systems Administration.
Users Responsibilities Regarding Data
