Changes Related to Faculty/Staff Computing Resources

This page serves to outline pending and recently completed changes to the computing environment for IPFW faculty/staff.

New/Updated Software

(January, 2008 - March, 2008)

Apple QuickTime 7.4
  • A media player application produced by Apple, Inc. which allows playback of apple audio and video formats as well as many other file formats.
  • Available for faculty/staff to install from: IPFW Icons > Internet > Installs
Kurzweil 3000
  • A tiered assistive reading, writing and learning medium, aimed at students with learning disabilities or other disabilities that make reading or writing difficult
  • Available to SSD department faculty/staff from: Dept Apps > SSD

Software Removals

(January, 2008 - March, 2008)

Microsoft Paint—MS Write—Notepad Disk Defragmenter—Windows Update
  • The above applications are being removed because they are a part of the Windows operating system.
  • Available from Start > Programs > Accessories
PKZIP
  • We encourage users to use the built-in ZIP feature of the Windows operating system or the new utility 7-Zip.
Paint Shop Prop 9
  • Version X2 (12) is now available for installation from IPFW Icons to replace version 9.

  • A PowerPoint plug‐in that allows the creation of flash‐based multimedia slide‐shows

  • A graphing program designed to aid in documenting and publishing research, specializing in the graphical presentation of results

The Geometer’s Sketchpad 4.07
  • educational math software
  • Available for faculty/staff to install from: IPFW Icons > MathStats

NOTE:

Supplemental to this, other Web pages detail available campus-wide software; minimum networked computer/printer requirements; and general ITS polices. Similar pages are available for changes to the student computing environment and software available in the supported labs and classrooms.

Changes to the environment are mandated by:

  • Support issues (i.e., a software product or hardware component is no longer supported by the source company),
  • Faculty/Staff requests for software upgrades,
  • Bugs or other problems that must be corrected,
  • Expiration of warranties on hardware, and
  • Our desire to provide the most current software and hardware possible.
Unless critical, changes will not be made during a semester. Where appropriate, testing periods will precede the replacement of one software program by another. Questions about this process can be directed to the Manager of User Technoloty Support, Joseph McCormick (mccormij@ipfw.edu).
